I have read the complete series of these books written by Kim Harrison. They are referred to as "The Hollow Series". There are seven books in all , and she continues to write more to the series, with the next one due out in the spring of 2010.
I must say that I am in love with this series. The characters portrayed here are some of the best. The consensus is that it is present time and the supernatural are among the population, and basically "have come out of the closet" about 30 or so years ago. It was due to a virus implanted in tomatoes, that killed off a large population of "mortal humans" , but did not effect the supernatural world. Thus, the revelation as to why they were not dying.
There are two forces of law enforcement, one for the supernatural criminals, and one for the humans. However, you will see how often these two will collide as you read through The Hollow worlds. Several of the main characters have broken away from these agencies to form their own investigative company.
Thus, you have three wonderful main characters, you will fall in love with , over and over. Rachel (bounty hunter "kick-ass" witch), Ivy (living vamp, you will read of the differences of living and dead vamps, one has a soul, one does not), and Jenks (pixie who is the funniest 4 inch character you could imagine, I swear by Tink's panties).
